Our Story

In an era characterised by increasing environmental concerns and the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions, the injection of biomethane into the Northern Ireland gas grid at Dungannon in October 2023 stands as a ground-breaking milestone. At Evolve, we are proud to spearhead this transformative journey for the industry in Northern Ireland. This is not a token connection, it is just the start of a journey to fully decarbonise our entire network.

November 2015

Construction of the SGN Natural Gas network commences.

January 2017

Natural gas reaches LacPatrick Dairies.

August 2017

Intermediate pressure contractors appointed.

August 2017

First natural gas domestic connection in the SGN Natural Gas network

September 2017

New natural gas training and assessment facility announced for South West College.

November 2017

£15million investment to date confirmed in Strabane.

December 2017

Successfully crossed the River Mourne, ensuring natural gas is available throughout Strabane.

April 2018

Distribution construction phase commences throughout the rest of the SGN Natural Gas network (Including towns in Counties Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh).

August 2018

Hugely successful NISEP scheme delivered in Strabane.

January 2019

SGN Natural Gas avoids significant road closures by drilling under A31 Magherafelt Road.

March 2019

Enniskillen town centre construction work completed 10 weeks ahead of schedule.

April 2020

We got behind the huge community fundraising effort to help make extra scrubs for care homes, GP surgeries, testing centres and some health trusts tackling COVID-19 in Northern Ireland.

June 2020

Gas network operators have marked a return to routine work by completing more than 200 new customer connections across Northern Ireland in the last week. There are now around 275,000 customer gas connections in Northern Ireland with a plan to extend this to over 320,000 by 2022.

July 2020

We launched a brand new service enabling customers to book a 1-1 appointment for a remote consultation with our connections team, becoming the first network operator in NI to do so.

August 2020

Announced a major initiative to plant 7,000 trees in the heart of our network area in the west of Northern Ireland.

October 2020

Announced the appointment of our new Director, David Butler to lead the huge energy infrastructure project bringing gas to the major towns in the western area of Northern Ireland.

November 2020

Fane Valley Feeds - one of the largest animal feed manufacturers in Northern Ireland - have revealed that converting their large fuel supply to gas has resulted in a 34% reduction in carbon emissions and improved energy efficiency.

February 2021

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council approved a major river crossing in Enniskillen as part of multi-million pounds investment in new energy infrastructure delivering gas to homes and businesses.

March 2021

Mark Davidson, a native of Scotland, says: “It’s a very exciting time to be part of the gas industry in Northern Ireland, with the possibility of biomethane and hydrogen as sustainable fuel alternatives."

July 2021

Local primary school pupils have taken on innovative new roles in ‘hospitality’ with the arrival of exciting Bug motels, courtesy of a major biodiversity project.

October 2021

One of the largest single pieces of infrastructure development ever to take place in the island town of Enniskillen completed.

November 2021

Dominic Scullion, Safety, Health and Environment Manager was one of a dozen novices who completed the beekeeping course supported by Northern Ireland’s newest gas operator as part of its biodiversity projects.

June 2022

The estimation of over 6000 GWh worth of biomethane in Northern Ireland was a major finding. This would account for more than 80 per cent of Northern Ireland’s Gas Distribution Network demand, meaning there are considerably greater volumes of the renewable gas available than previously thought.

October 2022

Northern Ireland’s five Gas Network Operators have today launched their joint plan to fully decarbonise the region’s gas network by 2050.

February 2023

A major milestone was confirmed this week for the gas grids in Northern Ireland which will see the injection of biomethane, a 100% renewable fuel, into the network.
