Significant natural gas works commence in Mid Ulster

Significant works are due to commence in the Cookstown, Magherafelt and Coalisland areas over the coming weeks which will enable homes and businesses to connect to the state-of-the-art new natural gas network as soon as possible.
SGN Natural Gas has announced that development work on vital infrastructure to bring natural gas to Coalisland is currently underway. Work in Magherafelt is scheduled to start on 7th May 2019.
Advanced works will commence in Cookstown at Orritor Road/Westland Road junction on Saturday/Sunday from this weekend on 6th April (Saturday only); 13th/14th April; 28th April (Sunday only); and 4th/5th May. The main works will then begin in June 2019.
David Butler, Head of Engineering with SGN Natural Gas, explained that traffic management plans will be in place to carry out the work required to bring natural gas to the Mid Ulster area. Motorists are advised to follow diversion signs and every effort will be made to ensure any inconvenience is kept to a minimum.
SGN Natural Gas stressed that local residents, businesses, emergency services and transport providers receive advance notification of upcoming works in their area. Engagement is continuously ongoing with local schools, sports clubs and other organisations in relation to the wider development of the natural gas network.
Mr. Butler said: βThe long-term benefits from these works will be the provision of new infrastructure which will enable businesses and homes across our network area, including Mid Ulster, to have access to the benefits of natural gas as soon as possible.β
Natural gas is convenient, reliable and the cleanest of the commonly used fossil fuels, offering customers greater choice of home energy provision. The availability of natural gas enables businesses to operate more competitively by reducing their energy costs whilst also helping to reduce their carbon footprint.
SGN Natural Gas is scheduled to deliver natural gas to around 40,000 customers in eight key towns over the next 40 years. The multi-million pounds energy investment project is one of the largest infrastructure schemes to be carried out in the western area.
