SGN Natural Gas is delighted to announce that recent gas mains laying work in Enniskillen town centre has been completed an impressive 10 weeks ahead of schedule.

The company, which is currently extending its network to eight key towns in the western area, began the work to future-proof the Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme, on January 7th this year and had indicated that it could last up to seven months.

However, the £2m investment project which will enable natural gas to be distributed to homes and businesses within the island town, was completed last week.

David Butler, Head of Engineering with SGN Natural Gas, said they were delighted to have completed the work much earlier than scheduled. He praised everyone involved for their efforts to deliver the scheme with minimum disruption to local residents and businesses.

Mr Butler stated that dedicated teams of local contractors had worked long hours amid difficult weather conditions to finish a significant phase of the new energy infrastructure for Enniskillen town centre.

Other work is currently ongoing in areas outside the town centre public realm which will enable homes and businesses to have access to the benefits of natural gas as soon as possible, the Head of Engineering explained.

“SGN Natural Gas continuously strives to minimise inconvenience for residents and traders in the vicinity of our works through ongoing direct community engagement,” he added.

Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton, warmly welcomed the news and pointed out that Enniskillen “remains open for business during all utility works”.

Cllr. Thornton said: “The Council welcomes the news of the completion of works ahead of schedule in Enniskillen town centre by SGN Natural Gas. This investment will enable homes and businesses in Enniskillen to access natural gas as soon as possible.”

He added: “The continued work by NIE Networks in the area is also welcomed to ensure a full upgrade of their infrastructure before the start of the Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme. This will ensure that improvements to the town's streetscape, undertaken as part of the Public Realm Scheme, are protected and future-proofed.”

The SGN Natural Gas network is currently being extended to an initial eight key towns in the western area including Enniskillen and Derrylin in Co. Fermanagh.
