SGN Natural Gas has been nominated in four categories for the upcoming IGEM Gas Industry Awards 2021 which recognise the contribution of the UK gas industry’s most innovative, dedicated and outstanding members.

The company is now in the running for top awards in the categories of ‘Company of the Year’, ‘Project of the Year’, ‘Engineer of the Year’ and ‘Leadership Award’.

SGN Natural Gas was shortlisted in the ‘Project of the Year’ category for its Gas to the West initiative which has helped deliver natural gas to eight towns in the west of Northern Ireland in collaboration with Mutual Energy.

David Butler, Director of SGN Natural Gas and formerly the Head of Engineering, is among the nominees selected for ‘Engineer of the Year’, while the company’s former director Danny O’Malley is a contender for the prestigious ‘Leadership Award’.

The organisers IGEM (Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers) and EUA (Energy and Utilities Alliance) announced that the awards ceremony will take place virtually for the first time on 18th May. Last year’s event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Northern Ireland's newest gas distribution operator, SGN Natural Gas is at the helm of one of the most significant energy infrastructure projects carried out in the region for a generation.

David Butler, Director, said: “The Gas Industry Awards recognise the most innovative and far reaching projects carried out within the sector across the UK. There are numerous outstanding companies and individuals among the nominees shortlisted. For SGN Natural Gas to have secured a total of four nominations is in itself a testament to the talent, dedication and vision of our entire team.”

“The project is playing a vital role in decarbonisation in the network area. Ultimately, we aim to remove millions of tonnes of CO2 from an area where oil and solid fuel use is prevalent. We are delighted that this ambitious project has been recognised by IGEM.”

“I would like to congratulate my predecessor Danny O’Malley on his nomination for the ‘Leadership Award’. I am also delighted to be shortlisted for ‘Engineer of the Year’. On behalf of SGN Natural Gas, we wish all of the nominees the very best of luck when the winners are announced on 18th May.”

Neil Atkinson, CEO of IGEM, said: “We were bitterly disappointed to have to cancel the 2020 awards as we know how hard our nominees have worked to arrive at the shortlist. However, we are hopeful that after the hardships and stresses of 2020, that we will be able to finally celebrate the incredible contribution these people, projects and companies have made to the gas industry.”

“Now more than ever, the UK engineering sector must rely on its ingenuity, its resilience and its innovative spirit. While many face a difficult road ahead, we are proud to be supporting the industrious individuals and organisations that are sure to be at the heart of the UK’s recovery.”

Now in its 21st year, the IGEM Gas Industry Awards 2021 feature a wide range of categories showcasing the industry and those within it. A panel of judges deliberated over more than 100 entries when compiling the shortlist, with the winners to be announced in a virtual ceremony on 18th May.
