A Strabane schoolboy’s unique gas-themed Christmas tree decoration has won him first prize in a festive art competition organised by SGN Natural Gas.

Aodhan Mc Granaghan (6) from St Catherine’s PS secured the highest number of votes in the competition which proved hugely popular on the SGN Natural Gas Facebook page, @SGNnaturalgas.

Six-year-old Aodhan’s winning design was a miniature Christmas tree featuring decorations depicting gas flames which fitted perfectly with the competition theme. SGN Natural Gas organised the art competition as part of a special festive initiative in which it provided a real Christmas tree for every school and college in Strabane.

P3 pupil Aodhan, who was the overall winner, received a Lenovo Tablet, and the two runners-up received ‘In Strabane’ gift cards.

Darren Young, Head of Business Development at SGN Natural Gas congratulated all the pupils for coming up with such innovative entries and thanked the school principals, staff and parents for all their time and effort by supporting the competition in school, at home and online.

He continued: “We were overwhelmed with the response and would like to thank everyone who submitted an entry, they were all fantastic and it was really heart-warming to see the pupils’ knowledge about natural gas reflected in their designs which were all so creative.

“We would also like to thank all the parents who helped upload their children’s entries to the SGN Natural Gas Facebook page and all the families and friends who showed their support by voting in huge numbers for the winners.”

Darren said SGN Natural Gas was particularly delighted to be working in partnership with the schools as part of its ongoing community engagement during the ‘Gas to the West’ project.

“Strabane is the first of the eight main towns in the West to be connected to natural gas and the recent donation of 12 Christmas trees to all the schools and colleges in the area is one of the ways of showing our ongoing commitment to supporting the local community wherever we can, following on from our two-year sponsorship of the Strabane-Lifford Half Marathon and Strabane Summer Jammin 2017 and 2018.

“We look forward to continuing to engage with the community as widely as possible which will include a series of public information sessions scheduled for the new year as natural gas will soon be available to over 1,300 homes and businesses in Strabane.”
